I would have believed it if I hadn't seen it. I never thought of hippos as rescuers and I never thought of them helping a duckling. You see something amazing every day. Actually it is interesting that the two hippos worked together when the one was able to help the duckling on its own.

I love the way the two hippos act after they see the duckling return to its mother. It is like sports fans high fiving after a winning goal.
Delightful! Notice how the first hippo understands the problem, and goes to get a partner to help. The desire to help is common across nature and this is an excellent example. I'm not sure about the "high five" at the end, though, Catherine! I think that one of the hippos had been thrown a treat or something by a keeper - but it's not clear.
You may be right about the treat, but it looked like the hippos were really happy about their success.
You are right, the first hippo realizes he needs help and goes and gets it. What did the hippo say to the other one to get him to come.

They didn't just help. They were intelligent in how they did it.
They definitely seemed to be coming to its assistance and to care for the little thing. That little duckling was so scared but they were very gentle with it.
When you think of how big the hippos are, it is a wonder they even noticed the duckling. Clearly there is more to a hippo than I previously thought. Also every one loves baby ducks.Heart
