These little guys are so cute!
I assume that the scent glands are operational from birth so it might be tricky to work with them. They are still really cute.

It is hard to picture a little skunk weighing less than a slice of bread.
What neat little things! I suppose the trick in not getting "skunked" is to always be polite with them and understand their stress triggers, as they will usually only spray when they feel threatened.
They are so cute it would be worth the risk of getting skunked. After all the smell washes off eventually, in a month or two.

If you worked with skunks I guess you would get to know what bothers them. If they knew your scent from birth they should be okay.
I heard tomato juice gets skunk stink off. Then I heard that was debunked, and the recipe was baking soda and vinegar?? I remember making "submarines" with baking soda and vinegar when I was a kid. We had a plastic submarine and put the mixture inside it and it surfaced, then sank again etc.... The mixture smells pretty bad to me.... (yuck)
I always understood that tomato juice works, but I found different advice on the internet. The common remedy now seems to be 1 quart peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and 1 teaspoon of dish soap. It has to be used right away. I imagine it is fizzy. I am sure you could make a smaller batch although if you got really skunked you might need that much.

I am sure the zoo with its cute little baby skunks probably has a supply on hand.
Skunks are such beautiful little creatures.
I will have to remember the above recipes as we have been "skunked' more than once. Sad
Payne has been skunked a few times, but the worst was once a skunk got in our basement. Payne ran in there to find it and the skunk sprayed. The smell crept up through the whole house. So bad it made my eyes water.
Not to mention Payne got a good dose, came running in the house, rubbing on every piece of furniture along the way.
Trust me that smell can last a lot longer than a couple months.
I saw a friend in town [several weeks after the spraying and many, many, baths later] and she could still smell the skunk on us.
To this day [about 2 years later] hubby swears he can still smell it on his coveralls.
I think the basement still smells, I have just become immune to it.
...and no, the tomato juice has never worked for me.....
The skunk smell does linger on. Someone brought a dog to the groomers a year after "skunking" and the groomer knew right away. She could still smell it.
There might be some products that help break down the smell.
I know I got an enzyme spray to remove the racoon smell from the deck so they would not keep pooping on things. It sure cleaned things and I can't smell the racoon now. It also removed snake poop smell from my carpet. (accidents do happen)
I know skunk smells worse than anything, but there must be things that get rid of it.
