Roswell shelter has had a high euthanasia rate. They have 10 times the national stray average so it has been hard for them.
Rescue groups working with them are encouraging them to do better and they have.
Now they have decided to lengthen the time and animal is kept before it is euthanized.
It is not a perfect solution, but they are clearly improving.

With the help of rescue groups hopefully things will get even better and one day Roswell will be a no kill shelter.

Bad shelters with high kill rates can be helped and improved.
This is good news in Roswell. Let's hope it leads further....

Shelters are often totally overwhelmed. Of course that should not be the reason why a healthy animal should lose its life.

What is needed is more liaising with Rescues (breed rescues & general Rescues/fostering/adoption programmes, etc) And the founding of new Rescue facilities. We need to help these animals (usually dogs and cats),  and more effort has to be put in to try harder to save their lives.
There are groups out there that can help each other. Areas with a lot of strays can send animals to places that need them. Sometimes it is just a matter of making the right connections.  Toronto  takes dogs from a number of different places. We also move pit bulls out of the province because they are banned here.

It is good that Roswell is starting to work with the various rescues.

Improving the shelter situation in some ways is a matter of getting groups in touch with each other.
There is no need for healthy animals to die. They are all wanted somewhere.
I agree. It IS a matter of groups getting in touch with each other, even if dogs have to be transported elsewhere. There is usually some Rescue Group who can help. I realise this is a lot of admin. work, but it is worth it to save valuable lives. Euthanasia should never be a way of opening up new places, or getting 'rid of dead wood' -or dealing with those dogs deemed to be 'unadoptable'. Sometimes with only one week's work, a dog can be calmed and helped, if only those in charge can find the time and the expertise to help.
That may all cost money of course. Then Shelters need to organise fund raising events etc. And make their mission as visible as possible, via Facebook and other social media.
We really should not give up on lives.

There is a very good pit bull rescue in Florida. It is called "Villalobos".  They are quite well-known, owing to the media coverage they got, and the tv series. They specialise in pit bull rescue but do take other breeds too. I wrote about them (I think)....in this section somewhere.
Yes, organizing the rescue places should help shelter animals some what. Suzy's time was up at the kennel when the Animal Protective League stepped in and took her. Then I took her about a week later. I was looking for a gentle, calm dog and Suzy is just that. Maybe they can come up with a computerized system to help the dogs, cats and other animals they get.

A computerized system to link rescue groups with shelters and transportation groups would be a good idea.
There are groups that take certain types of dogs.  I remember Villalobos. I have watched quite a few episodes. It is a great rescue. There are even groups that specialize in rescuing old dogs.

There are groups like truckers and pilots who will transport animals.
These groups do have some contact, but if it were better coordinated then over crowded shelters would have somewhere to turn for help.
I think increasingly euthanasia is being seen as NOT THE ANSWER. Finding homes when ever possible is the way of the future.
I am so glad Suzy found her way to you. You are perfect for each other.
They have computerized systems for many things and for someone to develop on for linking rescuers, shelters and the like would be great. I don't know if they have that already or not. Yes, me and Suzy are quite inseperable! She loves the treats I got her the other day and jumps up on me and licks my face to say thank you.
Suzy is the perfect recue dog for you and you are the perfect forever home for Suzy,

I think they are starting to link recues, with rescue groups and transportation groups. This will be a big break through in animal care. No pet at a shelter is really unwanted. They just have to get them to the right family and everyone will be happy.
