A female adult Leopard Gecko was brought into the reptile centre. They let her calcium levels get low and her bones are soft. In particular she has a "rubber jaw". That is a jaw with bones so soft it hangs open and the animal can't grab food. Fortunately she is not thin yet.

I brought her home so I can nurse her to health(I hope).

I offered her crickets and she showed interest, but no ability to catch one.

I offered wax worms (small and soft and good for them) and she looked at them, but couldn't pick one up.

So I have poured a dose of liquid calcium right into her mouth and she swallowed it. I then placed a wax worm into her mouth and nudged it in enough that she could swallow. She took two that way.

I will see how she is in the morning.

She is very pretty. I promise I will take pictures in the morning.

That is very good of you to take this Gecko and try to nurse it back to good health.

I hope she will get through this and be okay. She couldn't have better company right now.
Keep working with her. She may turn this around yet.

I gave her more calcium and another worm this morning. I will give her more tonight. I gave her a little water too.
She should get stronger and the bones can recalcify. The jaw may stay deformed though. It is too soon to tell.

She did walk around her tank for awhile this afternoon.
There is hope. She still seems interested in life and stands normally.

All she needed was a few cents worth of calcium/D3 powder on her food regularly.  Is that so hard to do?

The liquid stuff is stronger so we should get results.

Sounds like she is making progress. I agree that she has the best of company with you Catherine.

I got some more calcium into her and another worm, plus a little water. She actually moved her jaw a little. It is not normal movement or shape, but I think it is a good sign that she can move it. Maybe the calcium is helping already.

She walked around the tank a little. It is not too exciting just yet. I want to keep it simple so she can catch food. When she is stronger I can decorate it more.  If she really gets stronger I can give her a proper 20 gal tank and make it a really interesting set up. If she makes it I can give her a good life. I don't mind if her mouth stays funny looking.


I will have to come up with a name for her.


This isn't her, but this is exactly what she looks like, but she has a jaw problem and I am not sure I want her to be seen that way.

I got more calcium and more food into her today. She took water too and walked around. I have hope that she can get stronger. If her jaw stays bent it may be a problem, but if it is firm again, she should still be able to eat on her own.

She is  friendly and sweet. I really must come up with the right name for her.

I'm glad she is doing better. That lizard looks something like Lily the Newt. Lily was black and red, though.

It seems that your nursing is helping her Catherine, her odds seem good.
