If you can read this story without crying you are tougher than I am. I was on the subway when I first read it and it is hard to pretend you are not actually crying about something.

A house went up in flames and the mother just couldn't get to her baby. She tried and she received burns in the process. When the fire fighters arrived and could get into the house, they found the family dog dead, but his body was covering the baby. She was alive!  He couldn't get her out and he wouldn't leave her so he stayed there sheltering her from the flames with his body. Smiley19
Who can ever really understand the depth of love dogs have for us.

We always admire the dedication and courage of working dogs who are trained to do jobs. This was just an ordinary family pet who somehow knew what to do.
There really are no ordinary dogs. There is something special in all of them. When the time came he willingly gave his life to save the baby that he loved. Polo is one special dog who did more than anyone expected.  I am sure he will never be forgotten by the child's mother and someday the little girl will know she owes her life to the love of a dog who wouldn't leave her. Dear Polo.... That is so true. They will never forget that dear Soul.
Thank you for this thread, Catherine.

I am sure he will keep an eye on his loved ones from the next world, whether they know he is there, or not.

I think anyone who reads this story will send him their love. Bless you Polo.
Polo joins a long line of dogs and other pets who have given their lives to save their people. There may be some question as to who is the smartest species on the planet, but I think we can all agree as to who is the nicest species. Angel

I am sure Polo will never really leave them. He will want to be there and see how his baby turns out. Heart
A Polo mint (well known in Europe) - is the mint with a hole in the middle. It looks like a lifebelt ring....or a halo. Either of those suit this wonderful dog, Polo. He was (is) a true life saver and also acted in a way befitting a halo: he put saving a child over his own survival.

Blessings to you, dearest Polo! What a wonderful thing you just did!

Yes, Catherine, you are so right. There is something very, very special about a dog's unconditional love and closeness to humanity.
I find this story very moving. At some point the dog made a choice to stay with the baby and save her. We know so much about what Polo was like from the choice he made. He was loving and loyal and dedicated.
The world is full of selfless heroes who do not show their true nature until they are needed. Then they do whatever amazing thing is required of them.
It makes me want to take a second look at the dogs around me. Who knows what they are capable of doing. It makes me want to take a second look at the people around me. We hear a lot of bad things. It is so good to hear something like this because it reminds us that the good is out there.

Polo mints are called lifesavers here. What they really mean is life preservers, but that is an awkward name for a candy. Polo is a better choice. It certainly fits a loving dog who understood what mattered in life.

Dear little Polo, I shall think of him when I need to be reminded of the good in the world.
