Sadly, Tilikum, the Orca who has been so much in the news, has finally died. After a sad life of captivity he has escaped in death.

His life was a tragic one for himself and for the humans who interacted with him. He is associated with and the cause of three human deaths. He was the subject and star of Blackfish, the documentary that revealed the horrors of Orcas in captivity.

It had been hoped that he could at least be freed from Sea World to some kind of coastal sanctuary. It was not to be. He died without even knowing freedom again. Smiley19
We can't do anything for Tilikum now, but he has children still suffering captive lives. We can continue to push for their release to sanctuaries where they can have some kind of normal or at least less unhappy lives.

The days of dancing whale shows are over. Tilikum may be gone, but he will not be forgotten.

I think this is a link to a working copy of Blackfish.

I am going to post this now and if it doesn't work I will look for a new link tomorrow.
Poor Tilikum. Hopefully his plight will serve to help others, and change the way we view animals. I hope so.

He was a slave, much as many 'black' humans were slaves in a bygone age. Now those things fill most decent people with horror, and  cannot ever happen again in the same way. Let's hope that we are looking towards a future -not very far away hopefully -where animals are not treated in such a way and disrespected. And one day we will look back and view those captive animals in the same way we view human slaves -and resolve never to repeat such things.

Blessings to his Soul in the next world.
RIP Tilikum.
I think we will see an end to whale shows now. In future we will see an end to captive Orcas.

I think Tilikum is a symbol of all that was wrong with treating animals as slaves. Three people died and we still didn't learn the lesson that you can't enslave intelligent beings.  Remembering him and all that he endured will help us to push for an end to the Orca captives. They can be released to sea sanctuaries. We do it for chimpanzees and other primates that were used by humans. Now we need to do it for the captive whales and other sea mammals.

I agree, one day we will look back and reject our past actions. I hope when that happens we will look around and see what other things we are still doing wrong and change them. We can't change what people did in the past, but we can move forward.

If Tilikum can live in our minds as a symbol then we can bring some meaning out of his life.

I hope his spirit swims free in peace. I hope he knows many humans regret what was done to him and wish we could have stopped it.
