We have become a very tech active world. Our phones and computers sometimes run our lives. Of course all that technology would extend to our pets.
There are ways to use technology to interact with a pet from a distance. There can be trackers on collars so you know where a pet in. Technology can track you pets fitness goals the same as your own.
If that isn't enough, there are even "tech" dogs.

The robot dog is interesting in some ways and cute, but it doesn't look like a dog to me. It would lack the animation and warmth that come naturally to real dogs. Somehow I don't see why we need robot dogs when there are so many real dogs needing homes.
