Putting aside the fact that whaling itself is deplorable, killing a Blue Whale is illegal. The International Whaling Commision has banned the killing of Blue Whales and all countries including Iceland have agree to leave the Blue Whales alone.
The company that killed the whale claims it is not really a Blue Whale, but rather a hybrid between a Blue Whale and a Fin Whale. Experts agree that it is a Blue Whale. It will take DNA testing to be absolutely sure.

They are butchering the whale to sell the meat, but Blue Whale meat can't be sold. Japan won't be able to import it.
The company could be in trouble if they can prove it is a blue whale.  This incident calls into question the ability of whalers to know what they are hunting. This could bring whaling itself into question. It is already unpopular with many people.
This might be the thing that brings whaling to an end.
