All cats seem to like cardboard boxes. Do you ever wonder why. It seems we all ask this question. Finally someone has studied it.

We should have known. Cats like small cardboard boxes because they make them feel good. That is the essential answer.
Being in a small space makes a cat feel good and safe. Cats usually do things because they feel good when they do them.
So probably the answer to every question about cats is: Because it makes them feel good. Smiley4
I'll tell you a secret....
If you get a special carboard box and cut a door into it and write the cat's name on top in marker pen and put a really comfy cushion or blanket inside....the cat will treat it like a nuclear fall-out zone.

If you are trying hard to unpack stuff and there's one scruffy cardboard box around with some shreds of newspaper in, and the cat KNOWS you are busy with the box....the cat will choose that as the best place to sleep in the whole Universe!

That is CATS exactly. You couldn't come up with a better description.

A dog will do whatever you want, anything at all to please you.
Cats take satisfaction in doing things to drive us crazy.

I am not sure I would want a friend that acts like a cat, but you have to admire cats for getting away with this for centuries.
We actually stay loyal to them.
Yes they are exasperating one minute, and the next time you see them, they will come running towards you like they love you so very much Heart
I always fall for that... Smiley4
I've bought my cat some of the best cat beds going she likes the el cheapo one from a discount store the best,go figure.

They know just when to do this.

We will never understand cats. I would call them mysterious, but they are way more confusing than that.

The cat I'm looking after climbed high up in her room until she found a cardboard box filled with packed china. It must have been the hardest, lumpiest bed and there were spiders' webs up there but she thought it was great, Meanwhile she has 3 soft and lovely comfy beds she ignored!
Maybe it is the thrill of sleeping on something breakable. Cats love things that break.

There is no challenge to a soft comfy bed. There is no human reaction to sleeping in a soft comfy bed.
Maybe the trick is to put the soft bed in a difficult spot and tell the cat not to go there.
As kids were told not to take vegetables from the garden which guaranteed that we snuck and ate veggies all summer long.

That sounds like the sensible answer!
Another trick is to be very interested and busy with the soft bed you want the cat to go in, while ignoring the cat of course. Especially if you put a newspaper over it and pretend to read the paper.

That is brilliant. Cats can't resist sitting right where we want to read. As long as the cat never figures out it is actually a cat bed, you might be able to trick it into sleeping there. If the cat ever gets the idea that you want it in the bed it will never look at the bed again.

Cats eh! They are such a stubborn quirky creature, but they are never boring.
