Quote:This Zoo Let Visitors Throw Bricks at Their Animals - Shut it Down Now

Sometimes you read a news story so ridiculous you just know it can't be true. Like the one about zoogoers who threw bricks at a kangaroo just to get its attention. The Fuzhou Zoo in Fujian knew visitors were prone to throwing projectiles at their kangaroos. Apparently, they weren't satisfied with watching them just lay about, like kangaroos are known to do, rather they wanted to see the marsupial's signature move, the hop.

So earlier this year, when visitors began throwing bricks at a female kangaroo to get it to hop, it was no surprise. Pictures show the aftermath of the senseless attack; the female's foot had been so smashed it was almost severed. But that wasn't all, she had suffered internal injuries so severe that within days she was dead.

A few weeks later, at the same zoo, park visitors injured another kangaroo!

I heard about this. It is a terrible thing. I will look for the original story tomorrow. The zoo did leave bricks around where people could get at them. That was a mistake when they knew that people were throwing things at animals.
Why are bricks lying around for people to pick up? Signed. Thanks, Sameer.
This is shocking and horrifying. First that people can do that!! Second, that the zoo doesn't seem to have taken any steps to STOP them doing it, and it happened a second time!
Exactly, LPC....why are bricks lying around outside the Kangaroos' enclosure?

Thank you for posting this Sameer. I signed.
I found the article.

Clearly the zoo has a problem. They need some security guards to watch people. They need to remove anything that could be thrown at the animals. They should consider fencing or screening that would protect the animals. There needs to be some education of visitors to the zoo about respecting the animals.

Many zoos have volunteers. A volunteer monitoring exhibits could call for help and stop an animal from getting hurt.
Maybe the zoo should sell memberships. When you are a member you feel responsible for the animals. Over the years at Toronto Zoo, I have stopped people from throwing food, I stopped teenage girls from throwing rocks at baby geese. I just stood there with my arms folded looking sternly at them and they dropped the stones right away. As a member I feel like it is my zoo and I am responsible for it.

The Chinese zoo needs to do something. First I would clean up the rocks.
The Chinese have a bad rep with animals they only take good care of their pandas because they're worth so much money to them.
You are right. Pandas get special care because they are worth so much. We paid a million dollars a year to have Pandas here in Toronto. Other animals are not even protected from harm. It is sad.
