A small town in Newfoundlad has been over run with Harp seals. There are dozens of them and they are everywhere. They are on the roads and in peoples yards. Everywhere people look they see seals. They were migrating south for the winter. They came close to land in an inlet and the water froze behind them and they are lost and disoriented.  Gradually they are being rounded up and returned to the ocean Sadly two were hit by cars and died.

There is a possibility that global warming is part of the problem. The ocean temperatures have increased and the ice is not forming in the way the seals are used to. The shore line should have been frozen so the seals couldn't get close to land. Instead they were near the shore when ice formed and they were trapped.

This may be just one of many problems animals are facing as our climate changes. They don't know there is a problem. They are not able to see the big picture. They can only see the part of the world where they live. Increasingly we are going to see things like this as animals try to cope with a rapidly changing world. This time there is a town and people to get the seals help. If they came ashore in a deserted area there would be no one to help them. Instead of a funny story about seals invading a town, it might have been a long cold death for them all.

Climate change effects us all even if we are not all the cause of climate change.
