The wild horses in Chilcotin, the interior BC area, are descended from released horses. They were used in mining and logging and when industries shut down horses were turned loose. They have survived and become part of the natural ecosystems.
Biologist McCrory has been studying the horses for 15 years. There is a survey of the horse numbers going on and McCrory fears it precedes a cull. Alberta has already had horse culls and the Chilcotin horses were culled in 1987-1988. It was a brutal cull

Horses are one of the few released species that seems to have fit into the ecosystem and become a part of it.
The horses are blamed for over grazing even though cattle and logging do more damage.

We brought these horses here so we have a responsibility to protect them. Culls are done for completely different reasons.

There used to be a species of horse in North America a very long time ago. Maybe the wild horses fit in so well because there are supposed to be horses in North America. Maybe these wild horse are taking us closer to where the ecosystem should be.

Whatever the answer, a cull is a cruel way to deal with the horses and it should not even be considered.
