It has come out that at least 64 people died during hurricane Katrina because they would not leave their pets. Almost 100,000 animals died.
Thinking changed after Katrina. People are not being forced to leave their pets.
Now there is a portable shelter being developed that can hold evacuated pets safely near the people evacuation sites.

The most thoughtful aspect is the fact that the owners can visit and care for their animals while in the midst of an evacuation. People and pets suffer such anxiety when separated during a disaster. This is a good solution to make a bad situation more bearable.
I hope more places build such shelters.
This is a great idea. I am so glad something is being worked out for the animals.
Most people suffer enough during storms like this -sometimes losing their homes and everything they have. So adding worry about their animals to it is awful for them. At least with this new plan they can feel better about what will happen in case of emergency.
I hope this idea really catches on. When a major storm or wildfire forces evacuation, people could bring their pets with them and while they stay in the shelter, the pets would be safe in the mobile shelter.

I still think I would want to sleep on the floor in the place my pets are rather than leave them. During a winter power outage, my pets were a few houses away with a friend/neighbour who still had power. I was with them much of the time, but it was still terrifying. As soon as the power came on I took them home even though it was already the middle of the night. I just needed us all to be together in our own home.
I can't imagine what it is like to lose the home and everything in it. Having the pets safe would be the greatest comfort possible.
