Full Version: The cruel reality of the Betta Fish trade

Most fish are not treated well. Fish in the pet trade are treated especially not well. Betta Fish are probably treated the worst. Because they partly breath air they are kept in small containers with no water filtration. The way they are raised is cruel and it is designed to maximize profits.  No thought is given to how many fish die before they are even shipped. When they are sorted for shipping the less perfect ones are discarded. Who knows what that means. It isn't something good.
They are shipped in small unsuitable containers to large pet store chains. Some are already dead, others die while waiting to be sold. Again, they are kept in small unsuitable containers.
Once sold they are kept in Betta Bowls or Betta tanks, again small unsuitable containers. The fish will live out its life in a barren uninteresting too small container.
Maybe the lucky ones are the ones that die before shipping. At no point does life get better for them.

At every stage it is a horrible life for them. People get Betta fish because they think they don't need care. These beautiful fish are sensitive and intelligent and people make no effort to meet their needs. Absolutely appalling is the practice of using fish as living decorations. I have seen the fish used as table decorations at an event. The article mentions them as hotel decorations. This all needs to be stopped. Fish need to be treated with respect and their needs must be met properly.
All fish need to be treated better, but we could start with one small fish known as a Betta.  If we treated this one fish well, maybe we could start to treat other fish better. It is worth a try.
That is very sad to hear. This post reminds me of a video i saw before some years. It was a competition of which team cooks faster. The guy took a fish from a bowl or something and then put it in hot oil while it was still alive ! Sad
Then he put the fish in a plate while it is half alive and he poured some gravy on it. Similar thing with a snake which seemed more horrible, he cut it's head and entire body faster to small pieces and poured some gravy on it.
The person who came to check which team won, this person touched the pieces of snake body while it still had some movement ! I thought how that can be considered as a competition and it's one of the most cruel things i have seen.
Good to see you back, Sameer! I'm afraid that humans are a very mixed bunch. Some are aware of the issues of compassion and respect for all life forms. Others are "spirit dead" and only care about themselves and close family. The suffering of others, especially other species, is for them an irrelevance. Sometimes I am ashamed to be human when I hear or see the cruel things which they do.

We can but hope that humans will develop more sensitivity and compassion. In the meantime, all we can do is publicise and fight acts of cruelty.

Many blessings to you for your love of animals!

This is horrible. I have seen videos of animals being served alive. I can't believe they would allow this in a cooking competition.

I overheard someone on a bus talking about eating a live frog in a restaurant in Toronto. I didn't hear the name of the restaurant. The guy was excited about his experience.

You  are absolutely right. Some people are "spirit dead". No matter what they do they feel nothing. They can look at a live animal on a plate and eat parts of it and feel nothing. Most people just don't know any better and we can teach them. The "spirit dead" just don't learn. Maybe they can't be reached. I don't know.
I do know there are good, kind, enlightened people who are making a difference in the world. I just hope there are more good people than "spirit Dead" people.
I believe we are moving forward, towards a kinder better world. It is hard know about the cruelty when we are trying to move towards goodness. I know change takes time, but for many little creatures there is no time left, there is only suffering at the hands of cruel people.
