This is the first time there has been a proposal to consider the welfare and suffering of aquatic animals.  Fish are farmed in large numbers. It is a different environment, but it is the same kind of factory farming that other animals are subjected to.  Up until now, no one has put forth a standard for fish care.
The Aquatic Life Institute is leading this cause. They have created the Aquatic Animal Alliance, a coalition of groups like The Humane League, Compassion in World Farming and Mercy For Animals.
Trillions of wild aquatic animals are killed each year. Billions suffer in horrific conditions in fish farms. The alliance is working to produce a guide that defines appropriate conditions for aquatic animals. They are setting standards  that will reduce suffering and give the fish reasonable lives.

This is so important. Fish are overlooked. Animal welfare laws have progressed for other species. For the numerous types of aquatic animals that are exploited by humans, little has been done. The Aquatic Animal Alliance is made up of some very strong groups. They have a lot of experience and determination.
I hope they are successful in raising the standards for the treatment of aquatic animals both wild and farmed. It is time action is taken in this neglected area.

As an added bonus they are working on plant based foods to replace the fish that we eat. Once we have alternatives we can move towards reducing our use of aquatic animals. We can look forward to seeing these foods in the near future.
