Humane Society International is calling for the Canadian Government to ban the spring seal hunt this year. The ice is thin this year and many pups will die because the ice will melt before they can survive in the water. Hunting the pups in a year of high mortality puts the whole species at risk.

The  Department of Fisheries and Oceans has responded to HSI and rejected their request.

The DFO claims it is a responsible, sustainable "harvest". What they do not address is the cruelty of the hunt.

Ultimately the hunt is a horrific act of cruelty against helpless baby seals. There is no justification for it and no way to clean it up and make it a sustainable, responsible hunt. It is brutal animal cruelty that has gone on way too long.

Every aspect of the hunt throughout the years has been an act of cruelty. I can't think of any way  clubbing a baby seal can be considered an acceptable action.
There is no way it should be allowed and the government knows that.  Most Canadians do not support the hunt and the government knows that. So when will the government do something to stop the slaughter....the government doesn't know that.
It still seems unbelievable that a country like Canada would continue to not only allow, but actually subsidize a brutal slaughter like the seal hunt.

Without government support the hunt would probably have stopped by now.
The main market for the skins is closed.
This year with all the covid restrictions everywhere, the hunt has barely taken place.

Maybe this is the hear the hunters look in other directions for income and never return to the hunt.
We can hope and keep on campaigning.
At least coronavirus has helped the seals this year. There have been other places, too, where animals have benefitted from greatly reduced interference by humans. The virus is bad for humans, yes, certainly, but at least there are a few positives for other species.

Our struggles with the pandemic have definitely benefitted wildlife. I have seen a Golden Eagle and a Northern Goshawk in my own neighbourhood this year. I live on the edge of down town Toronto and in over 30 years I have never seen these birds. Now I see both! I seldom see people anymore, but sure I see wildlife.

People have no where to go and nothing to do because everything is closed. They are taking the time to look at wildlife and the world around them.
Without all the cars on the roads, the air is clear enough to see.
I don't know if we will continue to see things differently when this is over. I hope so.

The seal hunt was diminished by the pandemic. Most hunters did not participate. I am hoping they won't come back next year.
The hunt isn't popular and they will have found other ways to make money. This year may not be the last hunt, but it could be the beginning of the end.
