In July 2020 a Japanese carrier ran aground on the reefs off of Mauritius. The area is heavily contaminated by heavy fuel oil. Several endangered lizards in serious trouble because of the spill.  The Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust moved quickly to gather up members of three species, the lesser night Gecko, the Bojer's Skink and the Bouton's Skink.  They are being kept at Jersey Zoo and they are breeding and multiplying.  At some point it will be safe to return them to their natural habitat. Some will have survived in the wild, but this effort will help preserve genetic diversity the the three species. The long term survival of the species will be strengthened by genetic diversity and a healthy thriving, multiplying population will make return to the wild  more likely to be successful.

Of course I am over joyed that they have chosen to save not only reptiles, but two kinds of skinks. Skinks are my favourite. Since right now we don't seen to be able to stop disasters from happening, at least we can save animals that would have been destroyed by the disaster. It doesn't help the animals that have died because of the spill, but at least their species will live on.
