Esme the cat is also a cat burglar. She goes out daily and steals things from the neighbours. Often it is gloves, but there are other things she brings home. Her owner couldn't keep up with trying to return things, so she put up a sign announcing the cat's thefts and she hung the stolen items on a clothes line.
All day people have come by and taken their things back.

I doubt the sign and the publicity will stop Esme. I think the neighbours are going to have to stop leaving things where Esme can find them.
Some cats like to take things. We had a cat who went into the neighbours yard and walked up to the sandbox. The little boy had taken off his socks before playing in the sand. Our cat picked up the socks and brought them home. How do you tell your neighbours that your cat took the socks. How did the little boy tell his mom that a cat stole his socks. The whole thing was funny.
Esme however takes many things and I think it gets less funny when you have to explain the thefts over and over again.
