Exmoor Ponies are being used in European rewilding projects because they have similarities to the wild horses that used to inhabit Europe.
Currently Denmark has Exmoor Ponies  at a rewilding site. There is concern for their welfare. They area they are in is fenced. The food supply is sufficient during the summer. In the winter they cannot migrate if the food becomes scarce. The people running the project refuse to give them supplemental feeding. They want them to live wild. Some observers claim the ponies appear thin and underfed. Those managing the site claim the ponies are fine.

I don't know who is right or wrong here, but they do need to monitor the ponies.  A site that is in the process of rewilding may not yet be ready to sustain  a group of ponies without some human intervention. Rewilding takes time. If the ponies are fine and they have enough food, then observers should be welcomed to the site.
The only way to resolve this is to have regular observers check up on the ponies. I hope the plan for rewilding works. The planet needs more rewilding projects.
