The USA has declared 23 more species extinct. Some of the animals have not been seen in a long time. Others it is possible they could still be alive.

Declaring them extinct has good and bad points. It does acknowledge a tragic reality.
It can also stop conservation efforts in some areas. Admitting that something probably is gone, should not stop modern conservation efforts.
The focus now is on saving a habitat. That benefits all the animals that live in an area. It is not the individual species that is saved, it is its environment and all the other species that live there. If the endangered species is alive, it will benefit from a more stable habitat. Most losses are caused by destruction of habitat.
So we should carry on our conservation efforts as usual and hope that at least one of the species surprises us by being still alive.

Year ago I saw a documentary at a film festival about the ivory billed wood pecker. It was called "I Saw The Bird".
They filmed and searched the woods where there had been a possible sighting. Sadly they couldn't find it. I still want to believe the bird is there and that some day we will find it.
