People think their cat is fairly independent and can be left for a few days with extra food and water.  That just isn't so. Cats should not be left for more than 24 hours. Too much can go wrong with the cat, the cat's food and water, and even with the house.
It is better to arrange a cat sitter to at least be there once a day.

I think they are absolutely right. I have had cats and I have done cat sitting. If my neighbours were gone for a few days, feeding once a day was fine. If they were away longer I dropped in twice a day.  When they had to be gone over a month I took my supper with me for the evening visit and sat and ate with the cat. I watched TV and generally hung around for a while. If she seemed to need me there more I took work over and did it at her house. We had some nice times together. More than 24 hours without checking on her would have been risky. One fall it turned cold suddenly and the furnace was not turned on. I was able to call
a family member and find out how to turn the furnace on. It would have been dangerous for the cat to really cold for days on end. It was warm when they left on their trip.
Always find someone who will care for your cat when you are gone. It is not worth the risk to leave them alone.

That is an understatement. She looked after Sally Cat every day for years. She was my inspiration when  I was looking after Zooey cat. The longest stretch I did was 60 days. Rain or shine, winter or summer, she never missed a day.
