We all remember Winter the Dolphin from the movie Dolphin Tale. In 2005 she was found with her tail tangled in fishing gear. It was so damaged from lack of circulation that it had to be amputated. A prosthetic tail was made for her. It was hard to get the tail to stay in place because Dolphin skin is very thin.
A soft silicone-like sleeve was created for her. The prosthetic tail slipped over the sleeve and fitted very well. The material created is now marketed as WintersGel.
It is used for human prosthetic limbs now and has almost eliminated skin sores.
Sadly Winter developed a twisted intestine. She was carefully looked after, but there was no way to save her.

She was an inspiring little Dolphin. The loss of a tail is very serious, but she managed to carry on and learned to use her prosthetic tail. Her life has been an inspiration for many. Rest in Peace little Winter. You did much good with the time you had.
