A study done at NYU, Grossman School of Medicine looked at aromatic amines and their effect on our pets. These chemicals are found in dyes, cosmetics, textiles and plastics. The chemicals were found in urine and feces samples of a number of animals. They are also present in common flea medications. The need to treat fleas and prevent them needs to be balanced against the risks of these chemicals. It is not clear yet if there is a higher risk of cancer because of them. That requires further study. For now it has been confirmed that the chemicals are present in the animals studied.

There are a lot of things we have in our homes that are probably not good for our pets. They are probably not good for us either.
Since some of these chemicals have probable cancer links, it seems to me that we would be better to limit everyone's exposure to them.
While we are at it we should look at some of the other chemicals we regularly use. I think our pets would be better without a lot of chemical exposures.
Perhaps we need new flea treatments that are not linked to toxic chemicals.
