Longueuil Quebec Has proposed a deer cull to deal with its deer over population problem. They plan to cull 60 of the 70 deer in the park.  Local animal rights activists are challenging them in the courts to stop the cull.  It will be a cruel and stressful solution to over population. Instead of a cull, the Animal Rights Activists have proposed alternate solutions. The deer could be trapped and neutered to prevent further strain on the park ecosystem. Many of the deer could be relocated. There are safe places that are willing to accept the deer. There is no need to kill them.

As usual, the first plan is to kill everything. The deer should not have been allowed to reach this level of overpopulation. They could have been relocated years ago. The females can be injected with contraceptives to reduce the number of offspring each year. Now that the numbers are too large, some of the deer can be moved.
There is no need to kill the deer. If the city goes ahead with the cull it will be sheer stubbornness and a commitment to an act of cruelty.
Hopefully the court case goes in favour of the deer.
TNR seems the obvious solution for the long term. Natural deaths would steadily reduce the population - or if the overpopulation is already severe, then relocation to places willing to accept them. As you say, there is no need for a massive cull, as proposed.
The Animal Rights Activists are all ready to do TNR and to relocate some of the deer. There is just no need to kill any of them.
The city let the deer over populate the small park area. If they had neutered them or given them contraceptives years ago there wouldn't be a problem.
I am hoping the court case rules in favor of the deer.
