Examination of luggage at Bangkok airport revealed the presence of 109 live animals. They found turtles, chameleons, snakes, porcupines and armadillos.
The women have been arrested and the animals will be take  to wildlife rescue centres.
This arrest is part of a larger pattern of wildlife smuggling. Between 2011 and 2020 there were 141 wildlife seizures at airports.
The illegal wildlife trade is much larger. Massive numbers of animals are trafficked.
In this case it is not clear whether the women will face jail time or just a fine.

There is so much money involved in the illegal wildlife trade that a fine is no deterrent. Even jail time for the women transporting the animals is no deterrent for those organizing the smuggling. It is going to take some serious cooperation between countries if they are ever going to stop this trade.
There need to be some serious consequences for those receiving the animals.  Right now there is just too much money to be made and people are not going to stop smuggling.
