We have many endangered species in Canada, and some exist in very small areas.
In preparation for the UN Biodiversity Conference in Montreal, The Environment Minister spoke about developers putting species at risk. The endangered species laws are able to stop development when project puts a species at risk of extinction. This will be done as often as needed to protect species at risk.
Recently the endangered chorus frog was enough to halt road construction. Now a small fish called a Copper Redhorse will test the law.
The fish is protected by The Species at Risk Act.

The Species at Risk Act only works if it is enforced. If the government is committed to saving species and will enforce the law, then we have a chance to prevent extinctions from habitat law. If they do it enough, people will come to respect the habitats of endangered species.
Let us hope they do follow through. For some species, it is their only hope.
