Nations working under the UN have reached an agreement on a High Seas Treaty.
The purpose of this treaty is to protect the oceans. By 2030 at least 30% of the oceans will be protected areas.
The biggest block was funding and fishing rights.
The last treaty, the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea was signed 40 years ago.

Much of what lives in the ocean is endangered. The oceans themselves are endangered. It is essential that this treaty be enforced and that it covers the areas where the world's oceans are most at risk. This treaty is more of a beginning than an end.
