Full Version: Manta Ray populations in trouble

Manta Rays are very vulnerable right now. Their numbers could crash. They take 10-15 years to mature and have one pup every 2-3 years.
The whole population of a number of different species could collapse at any time.
They are being caught in fish nets and sold in Sri Lanka. They are cut up and the gill plates removed. The plates are dried and sold for a soup that is not traditional medicine, but still considered medicinal. The rest of the manta is discarded. They don't eat manta rays, all they want is their gill plates.

This is not about harvesting an animal for food. This is killing large numbers of animals for commercial purposes.
It isn't sustainable. The manta ray populations will collapse if this isn't stopped. The people harvesting the rays, now depend on the income from them.
This is a mistake. When the mantas die out, their income dies out. They would be better to seek other forms of income now while they can.
There is no benefit to letting the mantas die. They are part of an ecosystem. They need to be sustained for the good of that ecosystem.
Something must be done to stop this soon.
