New Zealanders are outraged by the treatment of a Kiwi bird by Zoo Miami. The zoo was charging $25.00 for a Kiwi Encounter. This allowed people to pet the animal. It was pulled from its den in the middle of the day for people to handle it. Kiwis are nocturnal and they really don't want to be touched.
A video of the Kiwi appeared on line and a petition against its treatment soon followed. Thousands of people signed, protesting the bird's treatment.
The zoo has apologized and cancelled the Kiwi Encounter.

The zoo now admits that the Kiwi Encounter was not well thought out. It was a bad idea. It did not consider the needs of the animal involved.
Most animal/tourist encounters are not set up to benefit or even respect the needs of the animal involved.
This at least has made people aware of how we use animals with out regards for their needs.

They are also considering a new, better enclosure for the Kiwi, that will more suit his needs.
