Many people are struggling to keep their pets. They are taking them to shelters because they don't know what else to do.
Various shelters have some good ideas. There are pet food banks. There are temporary care programs that hold people's pets for them while they get their lives back in order. There are low cost vet clinics at some shelters.
A Denver animal shelter has come up with a creative idea. They hired a social worker to help people connect with aid programs.

People don't want to give up their pets. They just feel they have no other choice. With a little assistance they don't have to give them up.
Pet food banks and temporary care programs are making a big difference. Having access to veterinary care they can afford allows people a chance to keep their pets. A social worker on staff is move that helps the people and their pets. Helping one helps the other. I hope they can make this work. Pets belong with their families and families need their pets.
