Rats have lived around humans for a long time, but we barely notice them. When we do our first thought our to exterminate them.
Maybe we should be getting to know them. They are complex, intelligent animals. Because they are active at night we seldom see them.

I didn't realize how complex their social structure is. Maybe we need to learn to get along with them.
They do clean up our garbage for us. We are probably benefiting from them cleaning all the food we waste.
It is too bad their lives are so short.
