Full Version: Space heater kills pet budgie

In the recent cold snap a woman used a space heater to keep her place warm enough.  The heater started to give off a plastic smell so she unplugged it.
Sadly it was too late. One of her budgies was gasping for air. He died the next morning.
The space heater would have been coated with Teflon. When over heated it gives off chemicals. This is true of Teflon pans, self cleaning ovens, air fryers and anything that uses a heating element and has Teflon coating. They are bird killers.

I think most of us know about Teflon pans. Many birds died because of them. Who knew they used Teflon in space heaters? I never thought about
air fryers. I have never seen a warning label about Teflon on any of these appliances.
I know birds are very sensitive to chemicals and it is sad a little budgie died because of an unexpected danger.
These small alliances should have to carry warning labels. You won't be having a window open if you are running a space heater in a cold spell.
You have the expectation that it is safe to use a heater indoors with the windows closed. Of course we also had the expectation that it is safe to use Teflon pans.

I hope other bird people can learn from this before it is too late. Sadly for one little budgie, it is already too late.
