Full Version: Oregon resident gets Bubonic Plague from pet cat

The plague does exist in North America, but it is rare. It is mostly found in squirrels, chipmunks and other rodents like mice.
The family cat probably caught the plague from a wild rodent. The human infected by the cat was treated in time with antibiotics and is fine.

Now that we have antibiotics the plague is not such a threat. However, it can still be fatal if untreated or if it is a more serious form of the bacteria.
There is no vaccination for animals against the plague. There is a human vaccine, but it is not widely available. This would be a good reason for not letting a pet cat roam outdoors in areas where the plague exists. This is an uncommon situation, but when you let your cat roam things can happen.
It is safer for everyone to keep your cat inside. Of course if the rodents are in your house, you probably need to do something about that right away.
