North America is having a bat crisis. Millions of bats have died. Bats are now gone in some areas.
The cause? White Nose Syndrome. It is a fungal disease introduced from Europe. The bats there co-exist with the fungus. It doesn't kill them.
The bats here have no immunity to it and they have died by the millions. So far no effective treatment has been found. Some treatments show promise, but will they be in time to save the bats. What will happen to the ecosystems if there are no bats?

This article goes through the issue in detail and it is worth the read.

I haven't seen any bats at dusk in Toronto lately. I admit I am worried.
I have camped in the places mentioned in the article. I didn't see any bats where I was.
We are in the midst of an ecological disaster and I don't think too many people know about it.
No one sees the little bats because they die quietly in hidden places.
We all need to take this seriously while we still can. It makes me wonder what else is dying out there that we haven't heard about.
