Dogs from two different teams have collapsed and died while running the Iditarod. The race is a grueling 1,609 km over mountains and ice and dangerous weather. Over the years many dogs have died. PETA who protests the race, claims 150 dogs have died. The race organizers won't say.
PETA calls for the race to end and is working on the race sponsors to get them to withdraw their funding.

There is no real reason for the race to be so long and so dangerous. Like many sports it just goes too far. When one dog died years ago, the race should have been modified. Why continue to put lives at risk.
