Gorilla tragedy at Cincinati zoo - Catherine - 05-30-2016
I am still in tears and shaking. This is such a tragic loss of life and so unnecessary. People let their four year old son crawl under a fence, a protective guard rail and fall into the gorilla enclosure. It is a bit of a drop so even if the enclosure had been empty it would have been a bad fall that would result in injury.
I watched the video and as far as I can see Harambe, the 17 year old male gorilla went down into the moat, to the child and was protecting him and keeping him safe from the water. He then carried the child up into the enclosure. Everybody was screaming and hysterical and given the situation the zoo shot and killed the gorilla.
I realize they acted to be sure the child was safe, but the child should not have been able to get into the enclosure like that. He didn't just fall in, he had to work at getting to the edge. No one was watching him.

This was a death that shouldn't have happened. The child should have been supervised. If the gorilla had just ignored the child he would still be alive. He went down to the moat and appears to be protecting the child. He paid for his concern with his life.
He paid for parental inattention with his life.

I think the zoo is partially to blame the child should not have been able to get through the fence in the first place,I watched the footage on the news the gorilla was bemused by the whole thing,I know the childs welfare was important but the whole thing was handled badly.

Oh that is desperately sad. The last thing Harambe did was an act of kindness, and the humans shot him for it. It is just too much. That poor Soul.

If Harambe were not a kind hearted gorilla he would still be alive. If the people had behaved better it could have turned out differently.
It can't have been easy for the child to crawl under the fence and then through the bushes. Clearly no one was watching him. If the enclosure had been empty the child could have drowned or even died from the fall. Letting the child get near the edge was irresponsible.
I have seen people balance children on the glass over the polar bear exhibit. If they lost their grip the child would go straight into the water with the polar bears.
The glass is now over ten feet high. The zoo didn't want to take a chance. Most of the bars, glass and fences are to contain the people. We are the most dangerous animal at the zoo.
I know the zoo did what they thought they had to do and nothing can change that. It is still a very sad situation. I am just glad they were able to get the two females and the baby gorilla to safety.

Very sad story, The latest I heard was the parents were to be charged, though it doesn't change anything.

You are ahead of me on the news. I didn't hear that the parents were being charged. They should have been watching the boy. He could easily have been killed by the fall.
Sadly Harambe has paid with his life and I am sure the rest of the gorillas are very distressed.

Doesn't matter who was at fault the facts are that an innocent animal lost his life because of some humans error happens all too often.
