City closes road for salamander migration - Catherine - 03-14-2017

Every spring Jefferson Salamanders migrate from their winder dens to their egg laying ponds. To do this they have to cross King Road in Burlington Ontario. Many were killed by traffic. In 2011 the city council voted to close the road for three weeks while the salamanders migrate. Since then there are no more dead salamanders on the road and there are eggs in the ponds.

This is a bold move for a city council and a very ecologically sensible one. I think they should be commended. They set a high standard of caring for the environment and biodiversity.
I hope other cities around the world take notice and look around to seeĀ  what they can do to help.

And for now the salamanders cross the road in peace.

That's very heartening news.

What a good idea! Thoughtful, caring and kind. It's about time the human car-race stuff just stopped or detoured for creatures. Great news.

Sometimes I am proud of what people do.
