Farmed salmon contaminating the Pacific ocean - Catherine - 12-02-2017

Atlantic Salmon are being farmed in the Pacific Ocean.  That seems like a bad idea in the first place.
When they process these salmon, bloody water laden with piscine reovirus is released right into the ocean. This virus is deadly to the Pacific Salmon. They are already very threatened. This virus could mean the end of Pacific Salmon.

Once again we are treating the ocean as a giant garbage dump. We discharge things into it with no regard for the consequences.
We seem to think that the ocean is so big it won't matter what we do. However the oceans are in trouble and the inhabitants of the oceans are in trouble. Since the planet is mostly oceans, what we are doing is putting the whole planet at risk.

It might seem extreme to think that one little virus can do much harm, but it is part of a bigger picture of disrespect and abuse of the oceans. This can't go on. Even if we don't stop farming Atlantic salmon in the Pacific ocean, we do need to stop dumping the waste products. That is the least we can do. Anything less is unacceptable.

Any sort of fish farm is intensive - and the result is inevitably disease. But the problem of wild salmon being affected by effluent from factory salmon is appalling and dangerous. Is the Canadian general public widely aware of this issue?

Some people have an inclination to just dump anything anywhere, with no regard for the environment, the animals, fish, or the consequences.  That we should use the oceans as a huge dumping-ground has to be stopped. With people it often is "out of sight, out of mind"....or the options cost money! How unintelligent.
Those viruses may be possible to kill using heat? Possibly....I don't know enough about that virus. But there would be no harm putting the waste products into large vats, heating them, and then releasing the waste into the ocean.

If the Pacific salmon are killed, that will have a tremendous knock-on effect on wildlife in Canada and the USA. Bears need the "Salmon Run" for instance, as the fish make their way up river to spawn.

I think the Canadian public is widely unaware of this issue. We may be surrounded by three oceans, but much of Canada is inland. The ocean is no real when you live on the prairies.
We have a history of not protecting our lakes. Lake Winnipeg, where I grew up, was contaminated with mercury when I was a child. So fifty years ago they had to shut down the whole Lake Winnipeg fishing industry. I don't think we have really learned from that. We still pollute and abuse our water systems.

This is a very complicated ecosystem. So many species are interconnected and interdependent. Putting a key species like salmon at risk is very irresponsible. We have no idea what the consequences will be.

On the whole we have treated the oceans as a garbage dump and who knows how that will effect everything. It is not going to be good.
