When donkey sanctuary owners took in Alan, they had no idea that he was actually going to rescue them.
They had to work very hard to save his life. They did so in spite of the fact that they were running out of money.
He was barely clinging to life and in some ways so were they.
Alan survived and his winning personality brought in the public and donations. However it was at Christmas when things were bleak that Alan became the Christmas Donkey and saved them financially. Since then his appearances have helped keep the shelter going.

Now there is a book about him called Alan The Christmas Donkey from Pan Paperback.
For a little donkey who was dying he has come a long way and he has brought his friends with him.
