Westjet no longer waiving fees for rescue dogs from the north - Catherine - 01-12-2020

In recent years WestJet has been waiving the fees for rescue dogs being flown out of the North West Territories. The dogs come from the Yellowknife SPCA. The are flown south where there are the resources to find them good homes.
WestJet has now decided to stop waiving the fees. Each passenger accompanied dog will now cost $50.00 and a dog being shipped will cost $100.00.
The decision came from head office.
If the dogs can't be shipped south then the shelter cannot take on more dogs.

Shipping the dogs south is essential. There are far too many dogs in need in remote northern areas. It is going to be hard to raise the extra money to ship the dogs. WestJet seems to have stopped the arrangement suddenly so the SPCA has had no time to make other arrangements. I hope they can work something out with WestJet or some other airline. Coming from the north there are not a lot of choices. As a sometimes Westjet customer I am disappointed in their decision.  The planes have to fly anyhow and one dog is not going to effect a flight. Bringing a dog to a new life in the south is going to have a big effect on the dog. I hope they reconsider.

Oh I see. The planes are flying anyway, so it's not a special mission. I could have understood them starting to charge if it were.

All it is, is one seat (for the accompanying person) and space for a dog. You would think they could manage that without charging. It is hard for the rescue. Plus doing it without warning  is unfair.

I do hope something can be worked out. I wonder if a petition would help?
Otherwise the rescue operations will have to depend on donations.

There are not a lot of flights coming from the north. I doubt they ever fly full. Some of the dogs just traveled as cargo so they don't even have a person with them. I don't think it cost the airline much.(If anything) I hope they sort this out and WestJet starts flying dogs for free again. Maybe the airline is trying to find a way to get a tax credit for taking dogs. If so they could have talked it over with the rescue group and come to an agreement about how they would do this. To cancel suddenly is unfair.
