3 litters of Red Wolves born at North Carolina Zoo - Catherine - 05-19-2021

The North Carolina Zoo has been raising red wolves. That have had 3 litters of red wolf cubs born this year. That is twelve new wolves.  This brings the pack number to 36. That is the largest pack  of red wolves anywhere.   There are only 15-20 wolves in the wild.  They are perilously close to extinction.

The survival of the species is now dependent on captive breeding programs. With work the numbers of wolves can be increased. Eventually wolves could be returned to the wild. They could  potentially  be reintroduced into areas where there are no more wolves. If nothing else, the zoo is helping to retain genetic diversity for the red wolf species. The numbers in the wild are dangerously low. The birth of these 12 wolf cubs is a real hope for the future for the species.
