Hurricane Larry hard on bird populations - Catherine - 09-18-2021

When Hurricane Larry hit the east coast of Canada and the USA, it did a lot of damage. In particular it was hard on the birds. Bird nests were blown from trees and many times the tree itself was blown away. The Rock Wildlife Rescue has collected injured and orphaned birds and is caring for them until they can be released.

Cape St Mary's Ecological Reserve was badly hit and nesting sea birds were injured and blown far inland. Many were killed.
The Canadian Wildlife Service is working to rescue stranded and injured birds.

After a hurricane is over we think the emergency is over, but for birds effected by the storm now is the critical time. They need to be rescued quickly. Some birds are just stranded inland. Quick action can restore them to the shore  and they will survive. Injured birds need to be fed while they heal. Orphaned birds need to be raised until they can be released. The quick actions of local rescue groups are making a significant difference in the survival rate of local birds.
Well done!
