Rare marine mammals seen is Salish Sea. - Catherine - 01-23-2022 There have been sightings of two kinds of rare marine mammals in the Salish sea. A group of Risso's Dolphins were seen off of Vancouver Island. The last sighting was in 1978. A fin whale was spotted in the Puget Sound. There have only been 3 sightings since the 1930s. Fin Whales are the second largest animal after the Blue Whale. Their numbers were depleted by whaling, but they are making a comeback. https://vancouverisland.ctvnews.ca/rare-marine-mammals-sighted-in-salish-sea-1.5750614 These are all wonderful signs that the oceans are still very much alive and even recovering. Species that we nearly wiped out are now coming back. The oceans are a mess because of things we have done, but life still flourishes. Hopefully we will continue to experience the presence of these rare visitors and see their numbers increase. |
