Meet us, don't eat us....Iceland replaces whaling with whale watching - Catherine - 03-29-2022

Iceland is in the process of banning whaling. It should be complete by 2024. Instead of killing the whales, they are promoting whale watching. The catch phrase is "Meet us, don't eat us". In the past tourists were encouraged to eat whale meat. Now they are encouraged to go on whale watching tours.

In the end whale watching is a more sustainable source of income. The same whale can be watched over and over for years my many different paying tourists.
Even if there is a certain amount of financial incentive to the ban, the results are still the same. Iceland will no longer kill whales. Smiley32
That is cause for celebration.

Good news. Maybe their motive was financial, but if the end result is an end to whaling, that is still wonderful!

Ecotourism saves lives.  Countries are learning that people will pay a lot more to see a live animal than to eat a dead one. If it works for Iceland maybe it will work for places like the Faroe Islands. If it works for whales maybe it will work for other animals.
