Bird Flu decimates Sea Birds in the UK - Catherine - 07-22-2022
Bird Flu has become an increasing problem. Many domestic birds have been culled to prevent its spread. Now it has gotten into the sea bird population at the time they come together to nest. The close proximity of so many birds has resulted in many deaths. For some species the numbers will be in the thousands. Adults are dying and chicks are dying. Some populations might never recover.

This is our worst nightmare for populations of wild birds. Bird flu is highly contagious and very lethal. It is hitting the birds as they come together to nest.
The time of the year that should be most joyful has become a time of death and destruction. There is very little we can do at this point. We can only hope that there are enough birds that survive to carry on the species. We won't even know how many are left until this is over.

Extremely sad. It was intensive bird breeding in China which caused the emergence of this virus back in 1996, following excessive use of antibiotics, resulting in resistant viruses. https://www.cdc.gov/flu/avianflu/communication-resources/bird-flu-origin-infographic.html

Our intensified farming methods have set up breeding grounds for viruses.
That article shows us how we got where we are now with bird flu. What we haven't figured out is how to get out of the mess we are in now. It was bad when the bird flu was detected in farmed birds. Now that it has spread to wild birds, I don't think we can stop it. It will keep spreading.
Maybe we can create a vaccine, but how will we give that to all the birds that would be at risk.
Once again we have created another fine mess.
