Planting winter wheat benefits ducks - Catherine - 02-09-2023

Winter wheat is planted is  the fall and it over winters before it grows into a mature plant. Some companies in Alberta have been growing winter wheat because it helps the ducks.  Spring planting disrupts their nests. Fall planting helps them. They lay their eggs in the spring and have plenty time to hatch them before the wheat field is disturbed.
In particular Coyote Pancake Mix has chosen to plant winter wheat. Their product is just as good as when they used summer wheat, but the ducks are better off.
They have become part of an ecolabel program that lets us know that a company is benefiting wildlife.

I am happy to hear that Coyote Pancake Mix is eco-friendly. We always carried Coyote Pancake Mix on camping/hiking trips.
It is a little change that they were able to make that makes a big difference to the ducks that use their fields.

I think a lot of companies could look at how they do things and find little changes that would help wildlife and habitats to survive.
