Toronto Zoo releases 55 endangered turtles - Catherine - 06-25-2023

The Toronto Zoo is involved in a number of conservation programs. One involves collecting Blanding's Turtle eggs and incubating them.
The hatchlings are cared for for two years and prepared for release. Because of the care they receive they are bigger and stronger than they would normally be at that age. It gives them a head start at survival. They will be monitored after release to see how they are doing.

The zoo has been doing this for ten year now. I am pretty sure I saw one of those turtles when I was out walking in the area. It was the right species and the right size to be from an earlier release. He looked very happy sunning himself on a log. It is programs like this that are keeping our endangered species going and giving them a chance to survive. Ten years is a serious commitment to conservation and it is making a difference.
