Birth of a Sperm Whale - Catherine - 09-21-2023

Whale Biologists captured a video of the birth of a Sperm Whale. The other females gathered around the female when she gave birth and they helped support the baby until it was ready to swim.

I am not surprised that the other females attended the birth. Whales are very much social animals. We are only just starting to find out how much. The other females looked after the baby at first.  Their presence would have protected mom and the little one and given her time to recover from giving birth.
The baby would have known it was part of a family right from birth. It sounds like a healthy way to be born.
