It is time to close the road for salamander crossing - Catherine - 02-27-2024

Every year the Jeffies Salamanders come out of the woods and cross the road to the pond where they breed.
How can they safely get across the road and avoid traffic?
The road will be closed for three weeks. It will be strictly salamanders only.

This is a mild winter so the road is closing earlier than usual. It will stay closed long enough for the salamanders to lay eggs safely.
This is recognition of the fact that the salamanders need our help.
Remember they are not crossing our road. We put a road through their migration path. Closing the road is the least we can do.

Is it not possible to do an underpass for them?

An underpass or overpass is possible, but it would be expensive. They only cross the road for a few weeks of the year.
It is easier to close the road. Money for an underpass would be better spent where animals cross the road all year round.

There are a number of places that close roads for mating season. Some places have volunteers that watch a stretch of road when turtles would be crossing.

I know I have come across things like this from other parts of the world.

Underpasses are good, but it would be better if we stopped putting roads in bad places.
Maybe some roads could be moved. Do they really need to run through the middle of a migration route.
