Feeding wildlife is illegal in some places, with good reason. - Catherine - 07-30-2024 A lot of places have bylaws forbidding the feeding of wildlife. In particular they do not want people feeding ducks and geese. There are good reasons: Poor nutrition Spreading of disease Unnatural behavior Pollution Overcrowding Delayed migration We think we are helping, but we are really not. https://www.collingwoodtoday.ca/local-news/feeding-ducks-geese-swans-more-harmful-than-helpful-wildlife-rehabilitator-9282855 People who bring bread to the park every day are creating problems for the birds. Poor nutrition is one of the worst consequences. What we feed them is not what they need to eat. I planted trees and shrubs that produce berries that the birds can eat. I have plants growing that produce seeds that the birds can eat. The birds don't connect me to the food source so they are still wild and still eating naturally. The food source is ready at the right time of the year. When it becomes less available they know it is time to migrate. If we want to help wildlife, it would be better to find ways to help preserve their natural habitats. That is actually doing something for the animals. When we choose to directly feed wildlife, we are doing it because of how it makes us feel. That is something to think about. |
